Great dialog around healthcare collaboration at the eHealth Initiative Conference this week in Orlando, Florida. Not even Mickey Mouse could keep the attendees from learning what’s happening in healthcare this year.Keynote speaker, Andrew Slavitt, played a game at the start to determine if the usual suspects from Buzzword Bingo were Hype, Trend or Fad. While there’s no perfect answer, here’s some of the terms with his thoughts and additional input from the attendees…
Big Data is Hype – access to information can now help you determine if you should have a surgery or not, if the expertise of the surgeon makes a difference and what complications to expect. However, you have to have access to Big Data to answer these questions. So directionally right, but not a confirmed Trend, yet! I believe it will be a trend before long because there is so much to gain here.
ACOs is a Trend – incentive for value-based health is well on its way. There will be a balance of wellness and sickness treatments, but directionally it is definitely a Trend. Attendees agreed in masses. While it’s a slow process, it is showing success.
HIEs is a Fad – Good idea, but sustainability is clearly a problem. We need the health information to be exchanged, but the current models for big collaboration here won’t stick. Public funding can’t make a long-term, sustainable business model. They need to deliver real, end user value at a reasonable cost.
Cloud is a Trend – Healthcare needs a collaboration environment and the cloud is exactly this. The train has left the station. The various cloud models have have matured during the last decade and lots of healthcare information already resides in the cloud.
Where do you think Analytics, Population Health Management, Patient Engagement and other bingo words fit within Hype, Trend or a Fad?
