I’ve just returned from HIMSS18 in Las Vegas, NV. Another exhilarating HIMSS conference is behind us. This year not only did the event grow to an expected 45,000+ attendees, but HIMSS is expanding geographically in their conference mission.
Global HIMSS Conference Theme – Harold “Hal” Wolf, President and CEO noted at the opening Keynote address, that it’s important that the theme of the conference, “Where The World Connects for Health” represent the global initiatives to improve healthcare through HIMSS and the conference. Healthcare issues and transformation must be solved globally and Health IT and technology are key components. This point was also reinforced by Eric Schmidt, technical adviser and former Executive Chairman of Alphabet Inc. (parent company of Google) during his portion of the opening address.
National Interoperability Problem – Interoperability is a continued struggle for most health systems. This has to be solved. Nationally, Jared Kushner surprised the crowd and noted that we need to fix interoperability among EMR/EHRs – moving a patient record from the DoD EMR to the VA EMR should be simple. During his March 6 address to HIMSS18 attendees, Kushner noted “The president is determined to make interoperability a reality for all Americans”. To do this there is a plan to overhaul the meaningful use program, expand Blue Button and MyHealthEData initiatives to enable patients to access their own medical records according to CMS Administrator Seema Verma. The strategy includes supporting innovation but also considers penalties to ensure progress is made.
Local Representation at HIMSS Executive Level – Georgia’s own Denise Hines, Executive Director of the Georgia Health Information Network (GaHIN) is the Chairwoman of HIMSS North American and on the Board of Directors. She kicked the conference off beautifully in the opening session and did a great job with the conference – Read Q & A with her and check her out on the cover of DOTmed’s HealthCare Business news.
How was your HIMSS18 experience?
Until next time,
