CARBONDALE — A software company serving corporations around the globe is expanding its office here in southern Illinois. The location gives SIU graduates a solid start to a career in computer science.
“You would think we’ve got to go to Chicago or New York or wherever it might be,” said CEO Larry Mieldezis. “They can stay right here.”
Liaison Technologies launched as an Atlanta-based company in 2000.
“We provide software that customers use to connect to the people they do business with,” said Mieldezis.
Two years ago, the fast-growing firm set their sights on southern Illinois. It was a plan to “rural-source” instead of “out-source.”
“A lot of our competitors and other companies were looking at moving jobs overseas,” said Mieldezis, “trying to manage the costs through those means.”
Chief Operating Officer Larry Mieldezis grew up in Marion and graduated from SIU in 1986 with a degree in computer science.
“Back then if you wanted to work in technology and leverage that computer science degree, you had to leave,” said Mieldezis.
Mieldezis headed to the east coast to begin his career and later joined Liaison. When the company expanded, Meildezis thought of the region he’d left behind.
“Build a presence here for people that want to stay here,” said Mieldezis, “who want to build a family here.”
The firm opened its first office near the SIU campus with one employee.
Liaison, now with a staff of 18, moved into a new location on Reed Station Road in the past two weeks.
“We found that it’s very cost-effective to work in rural areas of the United States,” said CEO Bob Renner.
Two-thirds of the employees are recent SIU graduates. The firm hopes to soon start a 24-hour customer support and business operation out of Carbondale.
“Quality people coming out of the university as well as the general area, so we’re excited,” said Renner.
