Topic: Big Data: Using Cloud-based Solutions for Better Access and Analysis
2nd Annual Merck Global Services IT Symposium, Wednesday, October 10
11:30AM – 12:00PM ET
The amount of available patient information is skyrocketing as electronic health records and input devices increasingly are used to capture data. This presents an opportunity to develop large patient databases that—among other uses—can help accelerate pharmaceutical research and shorten time-to-market for beneficial new drugs.
Unfortunately vast (and growing) amount of data exists in unstructured, semi-structured and other formats that do not lend themselves to traditional relational databases.
The challenge for pharmaceutical companies lies in discovering efficient and effective ways to manage “big data,” taking into account not only a high volume of information, but also the velocity at which it is accumulated, the variety of formats in which it is captured, and its complexity.
During Bob’s presentation, attendees will learn about cloud-based models to aggregate, harmonize, and provide secure access to data that originate from a wide variety of sources and disparate systems. A patient data aggregation and analysis use case will illustrate the ability to:
- Collect data from multiple organizations on a single platform;
- Handle structured, semi-structured and unstructured data (such as images);
- Control individual access rights;
- Offer familiar reporting and analysis functionality;
- And reduce infrastructure, staffing and implementation costs.
